Belvedere’s reward for completing the last four of the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Junior Cup at Donnybrook on Sunday will be a shot at champions Blackrock.

They went about their business well from the outset, but were thwarted by the combination of the Newbridge defence and their sub-standard handling.

The starting points are possession and territory and Belvo’ were dominate in these areas to ask all the questions to which there were answers particularly in out-half Sam Cahill’s dispatch to touch.

This would not be near enough to make a game of it until Newbridge made their opponents think about tackling.

A counter from centre Daniel O’Connor claimed a penalty. It was sent to touch where a clean lineout was trucked up by captain Rob Scully.

O’Connor had the gas to get around the outside where it took a brilliant tackle by full-back Rory Dwyer to prevent a try.

Belvedere out-half John Meagher cleverly worked Cailean Mulvaney onto the ball, but the centre ran away from his support.

The game was beginning to open up, Newbridge wing David Higgins making a great read to stop the next attack.

The accurate long passing of The Bridge backs looked to have put Ethan Lyons through a hole only for referee Gary Glennon to stop play to caution Mulvaney for a tackle.

It took another smart intervention from Higgins to prevent centre Adam Feely from finding the overlapping Cian Rogers as the Northsiders got closer to their goal.

Then, Newbridge’s O’Connor was about as lucky as you can get for just seeing yellow for a severe tip tackle.

The Belvo’ pack was stung into action, almost taking a maul home before Scully somehow got his mits on the next 5-metre throw.

The breakthrough finally came from a scrum, the ball nicely spread right for wing Rogers to take advantage of their extra man to find the line in the 24th minute.

There followed a sickening double blow when number eight Aaron Coleman and Mulvaney made the dents that enabled fly-half John Meagher to wheel around behind the posts for Mulvaney to make it 12-0 in the 26th minute.

The impressive Scully was in on the ball again to force a knock-on.

CBC Closer to Ending Munster Senior Cup Drought After Surviving Dramatic Finale

A late try from Pres winger Seán French made it a nervy final 10 minutes for Christians.

CORK’S CHRISTIAN BROTHERS College are one game away from a first Munster Schools Senior Cup title since 2009 after they held out in a thrilling Cork derby at Musgrave Park on today.

When Seán French, winger for Presentation Brothers College, touched down with 13 minutes left, it set up a pulsating finish to the game as Pres — last winners in 2010 — sought a game-winning score.

They looked to have given themselves a great chance when front-rowers Michael Shinkwin and Sam Deane helped to transport the ball deep into Christians territory but a heroic saving tackle from Daire Feeney ensured his side stayed in front.

Pres had begun well, advancing the ball with purpose, and the opening try came when number eight Jack T O’Sullivan blocked a clearing kick and chased on to touch down, though Peter Sylvester couldn’t convert from a difficult position.

However, Christians responded well, out-half James Taylor with a good penalty before a lovely move gave them their first try.

Liam Coombes celebrates scoring a try for CBC.

Taylor added the extras and he extended the lead to eight points with a penalty early in the second half. French’s try, set up by a lovely long pass from full-back Jonathan Wren, helped to reignite Pres’s hopes, but it was Christians’ day.

The match provided the near-capacity crowd with 64 points, 9 tries and one nail-biting finish in a breathless encounter.

Belvedere will only have 10 days to recover as they come up against St Michael’s in the semi-final on 3 March.

Belvedere opened the scoring after just four minutes when good play out wide saw Conor Jennings cross the line to give the northsiders a 5-0 lead.

Blackrock’s response was quick and impactful. Hugo Burke grounded the ball after Blackrock’s maul proved too much to handle for the Belvedere defence.

A superb conversion from the touchline by James McGowan saw Blackrock leading 7-5 with 12 minutes on the clock.

Rock and Belvedere will have to do it all again…

Blackrock vs Belvedere

They will have to do it all over again as Blackrock out-half Conor Dean sent this thrilling Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final to a replay at Donnybrook on Wednesday.

From the moment the draw was made, this was billed as the final in all but name.

Blackrock captain Caelan Doris plucked the kick-off right out of the sky for an immediate surge in the atmosphere and Belvedere flanker Max Kearney hammered prop Emmet Burns in a tackle.

It didn’t prevent continuity and ‘Rock forced the first penalty which James McGowan leaked right.

Doris was too eager in on the poach to cough up a penalty. It offered Belvo’ time to breathe. They were not interested in slowing the game down.

They were just as in-tune to test ‘Rock on the left and then back to the right, prop Dan McCaffrey an obvious dangerman in the close exchanges.

There was lovely variation to Belvedere’s attack, scrum-half Paraic Cagney feeding those around the fringes and wings James McKeown and Peter Maher looking for involvement.

The outstretched hand of flanker Richard Dunne gave Conor Jennings a shot at the posts. He missed from 40 metres.

Out-half Dean’s sublime pass had to be catered for in the Belvo’ defence. When the ball came the other way, it was too high for full-back McGowan.

The Northsiders came raiding down the left for the third time where Conor Kelly put a stop to Maher. Galvin returned the favour with interest when the hooker cut down Doris.

The first breakthrough would be important.

It came from flanker Dunne when up in support of scrum-half Luke Gaffney’s scything break and over the shoulder pass.

James McGowan converted for 7-0 in the 18th minute.

There was a quick response when the ‘Rock forwards did not retreat from Gaffney’s kick. Jennings could not make it count from 38 metres.

Bridge defeat Gorey in Junior Cup

Newbridge College vs Gorey Community School

The old order wasn’t too far away from being overturned as Gorey Community School gave Newbridge all the battle they wanted in this Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Junior Cup first round tie at Seapoint RC on Tuesday.

Newbridge College vs Gorey Community School

There were nerves on both sides with the Wexford boys especially looking for confidence on the exposed Kilbogget Park pitch.

They found it from their captain Sean Wafer, who produced a try to add a degree of confidence.

The Kildare school knew they were in a real contest now up.

Captain Jack Doyle started to give them a foothold from his leadership and general play.

Hooker Bill Kavanagh and left wing David Higgins pounced for tries to make it 10-5 by the 21st minute.

Gorey were going nowhere. They were there for the duration and they were menacing at the breakdown where openside Wafer and number eight Jack Ryan were prominent.

Fly-half Mark Boyle gave them territory and flanker Nacho Farina squared the game at 10-all by the break.

It was all to play for at this stage with Gorey’s big forwards causing all sorts of problems. Read the Full Article on LeinsterRugby.ie …

Pres Bray squeeze past ‘Zaga in nail-biter

Presentation College Bray vs Gonzaga

Samuel O’Dowd’s try turned this Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Junior Cup first round tie they way of Pres Bray at Donnybrook on Thursday.

Presentation College Bray vs Gonzaga

The over-eagerness, almost excitement, of both schools to get into the game led to a fractured opening with Pres pressing the action and Gonzaga knocking over ball carriers.

The first opening came from a penalty near the 40-metre line which Pres out-half Mick O’Gara whacked through for 3-0 in the sixth minute.

It didn’t take them long to get back on attack.

O’Gara was a whisker away from the try-line. Prop Keld redojevic had a pop from the recycle. But, the lack of patience led to a double movement and ‘Zaga came up for air.

It was clear they had to work their way into it.

Centre Fergus O’hOisin crunched onto the ball and lock Liam Tyrell was clean at the lineout. They just couldn’t hang onto the pill long enough to ask the right questions.

They looked more comfortable in defence where prop Ruairi Gilmore finally claimed a poaching penalty.

The sight of O’Gara being shown yellow for a hard tackle must have given Gonzaga confidence.

Their flanker Arthur Henry came hard and straight, but he was undone when Pres’ counter rucked with real authority.

By the time O’Gara returned the status quo had been maintained on the scoreboard. It should have been the spark for Pres’ to kick on.

Instead, the Gonzaga tight five forwards Hugo Fitzgerald, Luke Hammond and Tyrell combined to lift the siege.

Zaga overcome Wesley at Castle Avenue

Irish Schools Rugby : Leinster 2016 Wesley vs Clongowes

Gonzaga had to come from behind twice to overcome a resolute Wesley to make the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final at Castle Avenue on Thursday.
Irish Schools Rugby : Leinster 2016 Wesley vs Clongowes

‘Zaga were hit with the loss of their captain Barry Goulding in the warm-up with Michael O’Kennedy introduced to the inside centre berth.

This wouldn’t have helped in the opening skirmishes, although Wes’ suffered the loss of their scrum-half Bill Corrigan to injury early on.

Wesley wing Tim Spencer seized on an interception inside his own 22 to show genuine speed in taking it all the way to the bank for out-half Adam Curry to convert.

It took all of Gonzaga’s patience to create the platform for centre Harry Brennan to square it as a consequence of Oran James’s conversion, leaving it 7-all at the break.

Wes’ had to go back to basics and they did this well enough to earn a penalty which Curry struck for a slender lead again.

Clongowes Overcome Scare to Secure Place in Leinster SCT Quarter-Finals

Leinster Schools Rugby

King’s Hospital 8-33 Clongowes Wood College

Kildare men dodge upset with three unanswered second-half tries.

Leinster Schools Rugby

CLONGOWES HAVE SECURED a place in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-finals after an impressive second-half performance against King’s Hospital.

The underdogs entered the field to a huge cheer and looked so pumped for the game that there may have been concerns of them controlling their emotions during the contest. However, any fears were quickly eased and King’s dominated the early stages of the game.

Clongowes were barely out of their own half when King’s were awarded the first penalty of the game after several errors by Clongowes. Full-back Paul McCullagh stood up to give them a 3-0 lead.

That score sprung Clongowes into action and if it wasn’t for some last-ditch defending in the corner, their response would have been immediate.

As the rain started to fall midway through the first-half, kicking became more prevalent, with King’s fly-half Daniel Courtney starting to pull the strings with some clever kicks into the 22.

Quarter Final Place Secured in Irish Schools Rugby

Clongowes, however got the crucial first try of the game as lock Florence McCarthy bundled the ball over the line after nice work from Patrick Nulty. Centre Benjamin O’Shea, who kicked well throughout in tough conditions, converted to give Clongowes a 7-3 lead.

The men from Palmerstown didn’t wilt under the pressure and responded with a try of their own. After refusing to go for goal with a tricky penalty, they opted to kick into the corner and after several phases of play, they managed to re-take the lead after Sean Goodburn scored a maul try on the half-hour. The conversion was missed by McCullagh and King’s wouldn’t score again for the rest of the match.

The game turned when O’Shea managed to score three penalties in quick succession, with two coming before the break to give Clongowes a 13-8 half-time lead.
